Robert Martin Obituary

Robert W. "Bob" Martin, 81, of West Union, W.Va. went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 11, 2009, at his daughter's residence surrounded by his loving family and friends.

He was born Nov. 22, 1927, in Marietta, Ohio, a son of the late William E. and Adah Florence Covey Martin.

On June 13, 1959, he married Charlotte Jean Burdette Martin, who preceded him in death on Jan. 21, 1997.

On Aug. 20, 2005, he married Velma Hileman Martin, who survives. He is also survived by one daughter, Linda J. Hawkins and husband, Gary, of Central Station Community, W.Va.; one son, Robert Allan Martin and wife, Patricia, of Smithburg, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Joseph Landers and wife, Jennifer, and Sgt. Amanda Landers, all of Port Orange, Fla., Craig Martin of Smithburg, W.Va. and Heather Moore and husband, Robert, of England's Run, W.Va.; and one great-granddaughter, Gracie Jean Landers, to arrive in August 2009.

One brother, Leonard H. Martin, preceded him in death.

Mr. Martin was an apprentice meat cutter for Kroger. He worked for several years at Marietta Food Center, where he met his late wife, Charlotte. He was also employed at Croy Lumber Company in Marietta. After moving to West Virginia, he was employed as a foreman for Geneva Lumber then later retired from Coastal Lumber in Smithburg.

Mr. Martin was a member of Marietta Lodge 1 AF & AM and was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in World War II in the South Pacific Theatre. He attended West Union Christian Church and Doddridge County Senior Citizens Center, where he met his loving wife, Velma.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 14, 2009 at the Spurgeon Funeral Home, 212 Front Street, West Union, W.Va., with Pastor Tom Waters presiding. Graveside services will follow at 2 p.m. Thursday at East Lawn Memorial Gardens, Marietta, Ohio in the Chapel Remembrance. Friends and family may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
