Nelson James Smith, 88 of West Union departed this life on Monday, November 30, 2015 at his residence. He was born on March 20, 1927 at Parkersburg a son of the late Charles Hall and Mabelle Nelson Smith. On August 29, 1948 he married Betty Jane Duffield Smith who preceded him in death in March 27, 2009.
Surviving are one daughter, Kimberly Plance and husband Shawn, West Union, two sons, Neil Smith and wife Marilyn, Morgantown, Victor "Rick" Smith and wife Peggy, Blandville, grandchildren, Ashley Lake, Morgantown, Jessica Sheets, Greenwood, Melissa Smith, Blandville, Erica Corley, Big Isaac, Heather Mossor, Salem, Carrie Anderson, Grafton, Brandi McKinney, West Union, great grandchildren, Makayla Sheets, Brian Mossor, Destiny Mossor, Leviah and Heaven Grace Hartley.
Mr. Smith received his B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering from West Virginia University. He was President of Smith Lumber Company for over 20 years. Nelson served on the Board of Directors of West Union Bank for over 35 years. He was a member of West Union Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon, and had been attending Victory Baptist Church. Nelson was also a member of Doddridge County Senior Citizens. He was a U. S. Navy veteran. After retirement he enjoyed cabinet making. He was a loving father, and grandfather and will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, December 4, 2015 at 1:00PM in the Spurgeon Funeral Home 212 Front St. West Union with Pastor Bob Metz presiding. Interment will follow in the Masonic Memorial Park, Crystal Lake with full military graveside rites being accorded by the Combined Doddridge County Veterans Organizations. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel on Thursday, December 3, 2015 from 2-8PM and after 9AM on Friday until time of service.
