Mildred Lee Stinespring Maxwell of West Union passed away at home on Friday, January 13, 2017. She was born on May 27, 1921 at Oxford, WV a daughter of the late Victor Goff and Nellie Mae Nutter Stinespring. She spent her early years in Oxford, WV and then West Union where she lived the rest of her life. She married the love of her life, Bob Maxwell on January 15, 1941 who survives. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one sister, Maudaline Haught, two brothers, Bill Stinespring and Charter Stinespring, one grandson, Matthew Todd Ireland. Also surviving are three daughters, Donna M. Dowlatshahi (William Kramer) Allentown, PA, Karen (Woody) Ireland, Pullman, Sue Ann (John) Spiker, Jane Lew, as well as seven grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and one great great grandson. Mildred worked at various jobs over the years but one of the most rewarding of her jobs was being a homemaker and raising her daughters to be productive citizens. One of the best gifts she gave her daughters was teaching them how to sew as she was an accomplished seamstress. She was a 4-H leader for many years and assisted with county camps and other 4-H activities. Mildred loved her flowers and always had a flower garden. She loved to sew and cook and was always trying out new recipe she had read about. She also loved doing ceramics, crocheting and quilting. During the winter months she and her friends would have all day quilting parties. She loved to read and one of her favorites to read was her cook book. She also loved to browse antique shops and had a good eye for beautiful glassware. Mildred and Bob made several cross country trips to visit her sister in California. They also took trips to visit various national parks and had many happy memories at Canaan and Cacapon State Parks in WV. For several years the entire family met every year at Disney World, Orlando, FL and visited all of Disney Theme Parks for several days. This created many memorable memories for everyone. Later as health problems prevented these longer trips she and Bob enjoyed meeting friends and various restaurants or at the Doddridge County Senior Citizens where she had served on the Board of Directors. She was a life long member of the Order of Eastern Star, West Union and was a member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church. Special thanks go to the outstanding caregivers, Alice Davis, Becky Webb, Judy Jones, Chas Joswick, Judy Moore and Janette Smith; that provided such good and loving care during Mildred's last months. And a special thank to her long friend, Lea Williams. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 in the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Church St. West Union at 11:00AM with Pastor Charter Stinespring presiding. Interment will follow in the Masonic Memorial Park, Crystal Lake. The family will receive friends in the Spurgeon Funeral Home 212 Front St. West Union on Monday, January 16, 2017 from 5-8PM. Mrs. Maxwell will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Spurgeon Funeral Home is privileged to serve the Maxwell family.
