Michael Heaster Obituary

Michael Paul Heaster, 82, of West Union, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at United Hospital Center with his loving family by his side.

Born on April 5, 1944, in West Union, Michael was the son of the late Paul Asa and Alice Elizabeth Duckworth Heaster. A proud graduate of Doddridge County High School's Class of 1962, he attended WVU before being enlisted into the United States Army. Michael faithfully served his country for 20 years in the United States Army, including service during the Vietnam War. Throughout his distinguished military career, he earned numerous awards and decorations, including the Bronze Star Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster), Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (2nd Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Honor Medal Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal (3rd Award), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (2 Awards), and two Overseas Service Bars. Following his military service, he completed his bachelor's degree at Fairmont State College.

While stationed in Okinawa, Japan, Michael met the love of his life, Keiko Arakaki. Their chance meeting blossomed into a lifelong love story, and they were united in marriage on September 1, 1970. Together they built a strong and loving family that remained the center of Michael's world.

After retiring from the Army as a decorated officer, Michael continued his service to his country through the Department of Defense. As an investigator and lead polygraph examiner with the Defense Investigative Service, he helped pioneer and implement polygraph programs throughout the United States, leaving a lasting impact on the agency and those who worked alongside him.

He was a member of Immanuel Fellowship Church. He found his greatest joy outdoors. Whether hunting in the woods, fishing along a quiet stream, practicing archery, collecting firearms, or reloading shells, he felt most at home in God's creation. Hunting was more than a pastime to Michael—it was a way of life. He took pride in providing for his family, teaching valuable lessons about hard work, self-reliance, and respect for the land. Many of his most treasured moments were spent outdoors with his children, grandchildren, special friend, sharing stories, laughter, and traditions that will continue for generations.

Michael was also an avid sports enthusiast whose passion for athletics extended far beyond the field. He rarely missed an opportunity to watch his grandchildren compete and was among their biggest supporters, cheering them on through every season and celebrating their accomplishments with pride. A devoted follower of Doddridge County sports, WVU athletics, and numerous professional teams, Michael was known for his remarkable knowledge of sports history, statistics, and players. Whether discussing a game, recalling a memorable play, or analyzing team performances, he could often share details and statistics that amazed those around him. Watching sports with family and friends brought him great joy and created countless cherished memories.

Above all else, Michael loved his family and friends. They were his greatest accomplishment and his deepest source of pride. He cherished every opportunity to spend time with them, especially on the family farm, creating memories that will be forever held close in their hearts.

Michael is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Keiko Heaster; two children, Michael P. Heaster Jr. and wife Misty of West Union, and Tanya B. Heaster of Herndon, Virginia; four grandchildren, Michael P. Heaster III, Madison T. Barnette, Hannah M. Tucker and husband Daniel, and Hayden B. Heaster; one great granddaughter, Nola; two siblings, Charles "Patrick" Heaster and wife Patsy of West Union, and Tammy Elizabeth Beamer and husband Robert of Salem; as well as several favorite cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Timothy "Timmy" Joseph Heaster.

Family and friends will be received at Davis Funeral Home – West Union, 212 Front Street, West Union, on Friday, June 5, 2026, from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM, and again on Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 9:00 AM until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 AM, with Pastor Isaac Richards officiating.
