Marian Spurlock Obituary

Marian Elizabeth Spurlock, 102 of West Union passed away on Thursday, July 17, 2025 at Bridgeport Healthcare Center with family by her side. She was born on November 28, 1922 in Reading, OH, daughter of the late John Robert and Minnie Bagby Hughes.

At the age of seventeen, Marian graduated from Victory High School. Immediately after graduation, she was hired at Hope Gas in Clarksburg. In 1947, She met her future husband, Howard “De” Spurlock. He had just come back home after being stationed in France during World War II. They married and moved to Buckhannon, where “De’ attended Wesleyan College while she worked at Kroger’s. In 1950, they became parents to a daughter, Stephanie and in 1953, their son, De II was born. They lived in southern Pennsylvania throughout the fifties, and in the early sixties, they moved to West Union, WV, where they became co-owners of Star Furniture. She worked at various bookkeeping jobs in West Union and she eventually went to work at First National Bank, where she worked for several years until her retirement in 1985. She was very active volunteering at Doddridge County Senior Citizens. She served on the Board of Directors until 2019. Throughout the years, she has been an amazing Grandma and her family continues to grow. Her family meant everything to her, and she means everything to her family. Over the years, Marian has made so many close friendships with people of all ages. She was "second mom" to many young people in Doddridge County. Her life has been full and long, and God has blessed her in so many ways. Most recently she attended West Union Assembly of God. She enjoyed walking, exercising, and watching game shows.

She is survived by her two children, Stephanie Spurlock Stinespring (Charter), Arthurdale and Howard D Spurlock II (Amy), West Union; five grandchildren, Ashley Stinespring Harris (Nathan), Lauren Stinespring Mattingly (Varian), H.D. Spurlock III, Ty Spurlock, and Rylee Spurlock; eight great grandchildren; ten great great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Marian was preceded in death by her husband Howard “De” Spurlock in 2005; one grandson, Christopher DeForest Stinespring; two brothers, Carl and Ronald Hughes; three sisters, Vivian Hughes, Hazel Brown, and Phyllis Vincent.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Bridgeport Healthcare Center staff and caregivers for all the love, kindness and excellent care for our mother.

Family will receive friends at Davis Funeral Home – West Union, 212 Front Street, West Union on Friday, July 25, 2025 from 3-8PM and on Saturday, July 26, 2025 from 9:00AM until the time of the Funeral Service at 11:00AM with Pastor Joe Hoggard officiating.
