Lewis "Louie" E. Knight

Lewis E. Knight, 89 of West Union, WV sadly left us on May 17, 2024, surrounded by his wife and family, all of whom love him dearly and will fondly remember him as the patriarch of a tight-knit family built on compassion, a sense of humor, and lots of love. Louie was born on April 24, 1935, in Sunnyside to parents Smith Cyrus Knight and Bessie Gay Woofter. He graduated from Doddridge County High School in 1953 and continued his education at Salem College in Salem, WV.  During his sophomore year in college, he also worked part-time at the local ESSO gas station until he became the band director at Doddridge County High School.

Under his direction, the Doddridge County High School Band flourished with over 100 members strong earning numerous honors and awards.  The DCHS Band was Louie’s “pride and joy” for 18 years. In 1973, Louie accepted an administrative position with the Doddridge County School Board as the Business Manager and Treasurer and remained there for 13 years until his retirement in 1987 with a total of 31 years of service.  Louie became the “voice of Doddridge County” as the announcer of all football games and track events for 20-plus years.  In 1990, Louie was elected as a Doddridge County Commissioner and completed two terms in office.  In addition, Louie worked for 30-plus years at the Doddridge County Senior Center.

Louie is survived by his wife of 64 years, Carolyn Knight, three daughters; Marta Knight Gardner, Mikki (Bryan) Leatherman, Monica (Chad) Norman, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, two sisters; Mabel (Bob) Wagner, and Katie Goff. He was preceded in death by his son, Lewis Edward Knight II, two brothers; James and Kenneth Knight, and one sister, Helen Washburn.

Louie’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all his home health care and Hospice staff and nurses. Louie’s family will be forever grateful for your support and services.

Funeral services for Louie will be held at Davis Funeral Home in West Union, WV with the viewing from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2024, and Friday, May 24th from  11:00 a.m. until the funeral service at 1:00 p.m with Pastor Charter D. Stinespring officiating. Interment will follow at Masonic Memorial Park, West Union.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Doddridge County High School Band at 79 Bulldog Drive, West Union, WV 26456.
