Larry Ernest Cottrill, 78, of Parkersburg, formerly of West Union, passed away at his home on Sunday, March 22, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of courage, resilience, and deep love for his family.
Born on November 4, 1947, in West Union, Larry was the son of the late Ernest Lloyd and Catherine Virginia Hamilton Cottrill. A proud graduate of Doddridge County High School, Class of 1965, Larry went on to serve his country with honor in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. His bravery on the battlefield came at great personal cost—he was wounded in combat—but his sacrifice was recognized with two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. These honors reflected not only his valor, but the strength of character that defined his life.
Larry carried that same strength and devotion into everything he did. He found joy in the simple pleasures—golfing, watching sports, sharing laughter with friends—but nothing meant more to him than his family. He was a devoted father, a proud grandfather, and a man whose greatest happiness came from time spent with those he loved most.
He is survived by his children, Angela Dawn Cottrill and her husband Jon Shingelton of Richmond, VA, and Brent Scott Cottrill and his wife Laura of West Union. Larry was the cherished grandfather of Desirae Schoonover (fiancé Westin), Jaklin Schoonover (fiancé Ethan), Cole Shingleton, Catherine Cottrill, and Emily Cottrill, and a proud great-grandfather to Grayson Szulc and Keaton Jarvis. Each of them carries forward his spirit, his stories, and his unwavering love.
In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his infant son and his sister, Betty Cottrill—losses he bore with quiet strength.
Family and friends will gather to honor Larry’s life at Davis Funeral Home in West Union on Friday, April 3, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A private family inurnment at Masonic Memorial Park at a later date.
Larry will be remembered as a true American hero—one who faced the hardships of war, carried its scars with dignity, and returned home to build a life centered on love, loyalty, and family. His courage will never be forgotten, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
