John "Johnny" Hickman, Sr., 81, of Morgans Run Rd., West Union departed this life on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 in the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center, Clarksburg. He was born February 9, 1934 in Morgansville a son of the late Ira Dallas and Mary Davisson Hickman. On March 16, 1961 he married Ina Northrop Hickman who survives.
Also surviving is one daughter, Peggy Sue Hostetler, Banco, TX, one son John Hickman Jr. Tampa, FL, six grandchildren, one sister, June Cumpston, Massillon, OH, several nieces and nephews. Two brothers, four sisters and one nephew, Michael Allen Kelley preceded him in death.
Mr. Hickman was a graduate of Doddridge County High School. He was a U.S. Army and Marine Corp Veteran serving in the Korean Conflict. John had worked as aircraft mechanic in Texas and was a member of Local #132 Operating Engineers, operating heavy equipment. He raised and trained Registered Quarter Horses. John was instrumental in establishing Mt. Salem Revival Grounds.
Funeral services will be conducted in Mt. Salem Baptist Church, Morgans Run on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at 1:00PM with Pastor Edward Woods officiating. Mr. Hickman will lie in state one hour prior to his service. Interment will follow in Bethel Cemetery, Morgans Run Rd. The family will receive friends in the Spurgeon Funeral Home 212 Front St. West Union on Friday, May 1, 2015 from 2-8PM. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to WVGV Radio Station, VFW, Wounded and Disabled Veterans or missions of your choice.
