JoAnne Hoskinson Obituary

JoAnne Hoskinson, 94, of Big Flint Rd. West Union departed this life on Saturday, July 1, 2017 in her residence surrounded by her loving family. She was born on August 21, 1922 in Clarksburg a daughter of the late William Audrey and Willa Gwynne Layman. On September 17, 1949 she married Earl Hoskinson who preceded her in death.

Surviving is one daughter, Laureen Kelley, West Union; one granddaughter, April Gilpin and husband Matthew, Fairmont; sister-in-law, Peggy Layman; one niece, Barbara Wildman; two nephews, Dave Layman, Eddie Layman and wife Kim. One grandson, Rory Kelley, four brothers, Robert, Jack, Freddy and Ronald Layman preceded her in death.

JoAnne was a 1940 graduate of Victory High School. She had worked for Salem College as a secretary to Cecil Underwood and Dell Swiger. She was a former employee of the Doddridge County Board of Education working at Smithburg and Carr Grade Schools as an Aide and secretary. JoAnne was a life member of 4-H where she had been very active as a leader and received the All Star award. She was a member and past president of W.V. Retired School Employees, Doddridge County Historical Society, VFW Post #3408 Ladies Auxiliary, West Union, Doddridge County Association of Retired School Employees, and Farm Women's Club. She was also a past member of Doddridge County Emergency Squad and had served as EMT for five years. Her name is registered at the base of the Statue of Liberty. She received the Patriotic Citizens Award presented by the Salem Auxiliary. In 1995, JoAnne was awarded for her dedicated service by AARP and National Retired Teachers Association.

She enjoyed cooking and baking for people. JoAnne was known for her horseradish pickles and baking cookies for children on the holidays. She wishes to acknowledge friends and neighbors for everything they did for her.

Funeral services will be conducted in the Spurgeon Funeral Home 212 Front St. West Union on Friday, July 7, 2017 at 11:00AM with Richard McMillan presiding. Interment will follow in the Masonic Memorial Park. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel on Thursday, July 6, 2017 from 5-8PM. Spurgeon Funeral Home is privileged to serve the Hoskinson family.
