Janice Marie Crawford Michels

Janice Marie Crawford Michels, 62 of Wood St. West Union departed this life on June 6, 2011 in her residence surrounded by her loving family following a brief illness. She was born in Buckhannon on April 17, 1949 a daughter of Kathleen Cobb Haymond, Ravenswood and Russell French Crawford, Parkersburg. On August 28, 1970 she married James F. Michels, her loving husband and best friend.

Also surviving are two daughters, Carren McClurg and husband Robert, Morgantown, Sara Knight and husband, Jared, Morgantown. Grandchildren, whom she delighted in, Kyle Knight, Lydia Knight, Ryan McClurg, Evan Knight, Cayla McClurg and Audrey Knight, one sister, Donna Zidek, Pennsboro, five brothers, Ken Crawford, Parkersburg, Ron Crawford, Ravenswood, Chuck Crawford, Sparta, MI, Jim Crawford, Williamstown, Joel Crawford, Parkersburg, sister-in-law, Etta Ann Stadler, West Union, one brother-in-law, Ron Michels, Parkersburg, several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.


Janice was a 1967 graduate of Doddridge County High School, a 1970 graduate of Marshall University with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Education, in 1976 she received a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Development from West Virginia University, in 1991 she received a Master Degree in Education Administration from West Virginia University. Janice taught in Merryhill Nursery School, Sacramento, CA. Upon returning to West Virginia she taught in Preston County. She then returned to Doddridge County where she became teaching/Principal at Middle Island Grade School and taught at West Union Grade School. Janice then became the Principal of the new Doddridge County Middle School in 1992. In 2005 she was hired by the Doddridge County Board of Education as the Superintendent of Schools for Doddridge County. She retired from that position on February 28, 2011.



Janice had served as Chairman of the Board of the United Technical Center, Clarksburg, she served many years on the Advisory Council of Regional Education Service Agencies VII. Janice served on the committee for Doddridge County Citizen of the Year Award. She had attended Simpson Creek Baptist Church, Bridgeport.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the Spurgeon Funeral Home, 212 Front St., West Union on Sunday June 12, 2011 at 3:00PM with Pastor Earl Fletcher presiding. A time of gathering will be from 2:00PM until service time. In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorial contributions to Swentzel Scholarship Fund & Delores Hileman Memorial Scholarship Fund , both in c/o West Union Bank.
