James B. Kirkwood Jr. DDS, 71 of West Union passed away at his residence on January 12, 2010.
He was born on September 8, 1938 at Longacre, Fayette County, a son of the late J. Bernard and Goldie Ruffner Kirkwood. On December 29, 2000 he married Jonette Hardy Kirkwood who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, James B. Kirkwood III, Cottageville, S.C., Keith L. Kirkwood and wife Carrie, Charleston, S.C., Robert Bradley Kirkwood, Cottageville, S.C., three step children, Rochelle Schrecongost Goodwin and husband, Carte, Charleston, WV Alyse Schrecongost and husband Ben Gilmer, Seattle, WA., Samuel Schrecongost, Frederick, MD., three grandchildren, Sarah Catherine Kirkwood, Clarksburg, Cameron and Kaeleigh Kirkwood, both Charleston, S.C., one step grandson, Wesley Goodwin, Charleston, WV, one brother, Charles Kirkwood, and wife Bettye, Charleston WV, one sister, Rebecca Calhoun and husband Charles, Indiana and one brother-in-law, Graham Ray, RI. His first wife Sylvia Lough Kirkwood, and one sister, Martha Ray preceded him in death.
Dr. Kirkwood was a 1956 graduate of Gauley Bridge High School, and a graduate of the West Virginia University School of Dentistry where he served as a professor. He worked in private practice in Clarksburg for many years and also worked for Prime Care. He was an Eagle Scout and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Dr. Kirkwood was a member of the American Dental Association, W.V. Dental Society, Mon. Valley Dental Society, National Ski Patrol, Clarksburg Rotary, Clarksburg Country Club, and Doddridge County Economic Development Association. Dr. Kirkwood was a member of the Prince of Peace Episcopal Church, Salem.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 2:30 PM at the Prince of Peace Episcopal Church, Salem. A meal will follow at the Cottage Corner Restaurant. Memorial gifts are not expected, but if you wish, donations may be sent to the Episcopal Relief Haiti Fund at www.er-d.org. The Prince of Peace holds services in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Rt.23, Salem.
