Elma Leggett Obituary

Elma Mae Leggett, 99, of West Union, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Pine View Nursing Home in Harrisville, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, learning, and quiet service to others.

She was born on February 28, 1926, in West Union, West Virginia, the beloved daughter of the late Hedric and Wanda Pigott Leggett. Elma was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Eugene Leggett, who passed in infancy, and Nathan Roy Leggett, as well as her sister-in-law, Juanita Leggett.

Elma is lovingly survived by her nephew, Steve Leggett (Michelle), and her great-nephew, Johnathan Leggett (Donna), who will cherish her memory and the many lessons she shared through her life.

Education was not just Elma’s career—it was her calling. A proud graduate of Doddridge County High School in 1944, she went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Salem College in 1951. For 38 years, Elma devoted herself wholeheartedly to teaching and nurturing children, serving as an elementary school teacher and principal at Double Camp School, Smith School, Harmony School, and Summers School. Her classroom was a place of encouragement, discipline, and compassion, where countless young lives were shaped by her patience, wisdom, and belief in the power of learning. She retired in 1984, leaving behind generations of students who carried her influence into their own lives.

Even in retirement, Elma’s desire to serve others never slowed. Beginning in 1986, she volunteered as a tax preparer at the Ritchie County Senior Center, generously giving her time and talents to help her community with care and integrity. Her service was marked by humility and a genuine concern for others.

Elma was a faithful member of Oxford Church, where her quiet devotion and steady presence reflected her deep faith and love for God. Her life was a testament to service, dedication, and grace.

Private interment will be held at Masonic Memorial Park in West Union. A Celebration of Elma’s Life will be held at a later date.
