Dessie Daugherty Obituary

Dessie P. Daugherty, 95 of Lincoln Ave. West Union departed this life on Sunday, February 5, 2017 at her residence surrounded by her family. She was born on May 29, 1921 in West Union a daughter of the late Jonathan Berty and Anna Ware Pitts. On July 5, 1941, she married Waitman Dodd and is survived by two of his children, Linda K. Dodd McCullough, of West Union and Sharon A. Dodd Brown, of Cincinnati, OH. On November 26, 1964, she married Bernard Daugherty and is survived by three step children, B. Michael Daugherty and wife DarlaJo, Marietta, OH, Donna R. Ferrebee, Norfolk, VA. and Lois J. Miller and husband James, Enterprise, AL. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Greg McCullough, Chad McCullough, Brandy Poole and husband Joe, all of SC, Angela Evans and Ashley McCullough, both of Parkersburg, Christopher Dotson, Cincinnati, OH, four step-grandchildren, Russell Daugherty and Travis Daugherty, both of Parkersburg, Arlen Wesley Ferrebee, Washington, DC, Megan Walton Yoder, Brandon, AL; fourteen great grandchildren, Jeremy, Peyton, Keeley, Mathison and Harrison McCullough, Megan Hankins, Tyler Gatrell, Garrett Poole, Jordan McCullough, Kristi Williams, Audrienna, Cody, and Savannah Dotson, Chad Boso, one step great grandson, Philip Walton Yoder, two great great granddaughters, Lainey Hankins, and Ella Gatrell and one great great grandson Tatum Boso, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husbands she was preceded in death by five sisters, Lucille Wise, Opal Gatrell, Mabel Wolford, Evelyn Wolfe, and Elsie M. Rhoades, and three brothers, Leonard, Murl, and Howard Pitts.

Mrs. Daugherty was a member of the West Union Christian Church since the 40's where she served as its Treasurer for more than 20 years. She loved the Lord and her church. Dessie was a Charter Member of the Night Owl's, now named CEOS; a 60 year plus member of Order of Eastern Star, West Union, Lifetime member of Doddridge County Historical Society, Charter member of West Union Business & Professional Women's Club; member of Doddridge County Senior Citizens, where she served on the Board of Directors and on the Advisory Council on Aging representing the county for several years. In the early 50's Dessie and other women belonging to the Business & Professional Women's Club were the first women to be elected to the Town Council of West Union. She was appointed County Clerk by the Doddridge County Commission July 1955 after the death of County Clerk Hall Maxwell and upon expiration of that term she was elected to that position becoming the first woman to be elected to a Doddridge County office. Dessie continued to serve as County Clerk for 32 years. Prior to serving in that position she was secretary to Judge Robert L. Holland, SR.; Prosecuting Attorney, and Deputy County Clerk. During WWII she was employed by John Deere Co. working in Battle Creek, MI in the billing department. Upon her retirement, she learned to clog and started bowling in a Clarksburg league. She enjoyed playing dominoes and other games with her family.

Funeral services will be conducted in the Spurgeon Funeral Home 212 Front St. West Union on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at 1:00PM with Pastor Joseph Schneider presiding. Interment will follow in the Masonic Memorial Park, Crystal Lake. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 from 2-8PM and after 9AM on Wednesday until time of service.
