Corwin Dale Nicholson, 89, of Coldwater, Doddridge County passed away Monday, July 30, 2018. He was born August 26, 1928 in Coldwater, WV, the third child of the late Homer C. and Phyllis V. Swisher Nicholson. On January 11, 1951 he married the mother of his children, Eleanor Gum Nicholson who survives.
Surviving are four children Michael and Janet Nicholson of Coldwater, Mitchell and Mindy Nicholson of Coldwater, Jane Nicholson Canton, Ohio, Genie and Bob Hardman of Good Hope. Also surviving are six grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. Dale was blessed with his special sidekick, caregiver, and helper J.T. Nicholson, caregiver Kalyn Marple husband Luke and children Lakyn, Cory, and Cordell, Brandon and Jondrea Nicholson and children Brooks and Abi , Sheena and Roadie Gray and children Rylee and Rayme and Christopher and Anna Hardman.
He is survived by three sisters Jeanette Nicholson of Pineview Nursing Home Harrisville, Patricia and Jim Davisson of Salem, Ersel and Darrel Reed, and sister-in-law Wilma Nicholson all of Coldwater. He was preceded in death by brothers Junior Nicholson, Herschel Nicholson, Dave Nicholson, Robert Joe Nicholson, and sister Norma Jean Woofter.
Dale was a lifelong member of the Indian Fork Baptist Church where he served as song leader, Sunday school superintendent, deacon and trustee. He was a proud combat veteran of the Korean War serving with the U.S. Army 40th Infantry Division , earned the rank of corporal and was the recipient of a Bronze star, Korean Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and the U.N. Service Medal. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion.
Dale retired from Hope Gas/CNG as a well tender in Kennedy District with 30 years of service. He enjoyed reminiscing about working at numerous compression station s including Sweeney, Straight Run, Tonkin, Lightburn, Maxwell, and Marks. Dale enjoyed farming especially Black Angus cattle and proudly watching his grandchildren participate in the Doddridge County fair livestock activities. He loved watching television, especially football (Dallas Cowboys) and basketball games and the series M.A.S. H. Dad loved sausage gravy and biscuits, anything chocolate and was always ready for a bowl of ice cream.
Funeral services will be conducted in the Spurgeon Funeral Home 212 Front St. West Union on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at 1:00 PM with Pastor Chuck Travis presiding. Interment will follow in the Masonic Memorial Park, West Union with full military honors being accorded by the Lewis County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel on Friday, August 3, 2018 from 2-8 p.m. and after 9 a.m. on Saturday until time of service.
