Clem Murphy Obituary

Clem L. Murphy Jr, 76, of Smithburg Community, West Union passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 in the United Hospital Center. He was born February 25, 1937 in Tyler County a son of the late Clem L. Murphy Sr. and Lena Grace Williams Murphy. On October 5, 1957 he married Lois Carpenter Murphy who survives.

Also surviving is two daughters, Robin Travis and husband "Smokey", New Milton, Martha Evans, Black Lick, two sons, David Murphy and wife Pauline, Nutter Fork, Mark Murphy, Smithburg, grandchildren, Zachary Travis, Crystal Kelley, Nicole Thompson, Kimberly Vandevender, Nathan Murphy, Clayton Evans, Lindsey Travis, Sarah Evans, Jessica Travis and Robert Moore, great grandchildren, Abby Thompson, Natalie & Ryan Kelley, Ethan & Lena Thompson, Cameron Kelley, Michael Thompson, Chyanne & Daniel Vandevender, Kordale Travis & Neelin Moore. One infant daughter, Janet Lee Murphy, one brother, James Murphy, sister-in-law, Ramona Lowther Murphy and nephew James Rodney Murphy preceded him in death.

Mr. Murphy was a 1957 graduate of Doddridge County High School. He worked for Kiger's Esso for nine years. Clem was retired from the Doddridge County Board of Education with 32 years of service, where he worked as a janitor at the High School and Middle School and later worked in the maintenance department where he was the Director of Maintenance. After retirement he worked for the West Union Bank as a courier for 13 years. Clem was a charter member of the Smithburg Volunteer Fire Department and had served as Chief and was a firefighter for many years. He was a member of the Doddridge County Emergency Squad as a driver, a member of C.B. Club where he enjoyed the holiday weekend coffee stops where he enjoyed talking to people from other states and countries. If you knew Clem, he loved to talk. He was a member of Red Oak Grove Church where he had served as superintendant. Clem enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, football games and walking over the hills of his farm.

Funeral services will be conducted in the Spurgeon Funeral Home 212 Front St. West Union at 1:00Pm on Saturday, July 27, 2013 with Pastor Robert McClanen presiding. Interment will follow in the Freeman Cemetery, Crystal Lake. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel on Thursday, July 25, 2014 from 4-8PM and after 9AM on Saturday, July 27, 2014 until service time. There will be no visitation on Friday.
