Arthur Art Bland, 95, of Blandville Community, West Union passed away Tuesday, December 30, 2008 in the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center, Clarksburg. He was born May 5, 1913 in Blandville a son of the late Arthur C. and Julia E. Sutton Bland. On June 8, 1935 he married Dortha Dottie Bailey Bland who preceded him in death on September 21, 1995.
He is survived by one daughter, Joan M. Dils, Gans, PA, one son, David G. Bland, West Union and one grandson, D. Bruce Bland, Washington, DC.
Mr. Bland was the last surviving member of his immediate family being preceded in death by four sisters, Frankie Bland, Edna Lewis, Bessie Brannon, Virginia Gabbert, 5 brothers, Bruce O. Bland, Walter G. Bland, Gale C. Bland, George E, and William E. Bland.
Art was a 1935 graduate of Salem College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, where he had served in the European Theatre for three years and had attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He retired in 1977 with 42 years of service from the United States Postal Service where he had been a clerk and supervisor at the West Union Post Office. He was a member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Friendship Lodge #56 AF & AM, West Union, where he had served as Past Master and Treasurer. He was a 32-degree Scottish Rite Mason with membership in Clarksburg and Wheeling Bodies. Art was a member of Nemesis Shrine, Parkersburg, and Central WV Shrine Club. He was a member of Cecil Robinson Post #25 American Legion where he had served as Post Commander and Adjutant, VFW Post #3408, West Union, American Association of Retired Persons, Doddridge County Senior Citizens Inc & Scout Master for Troop 31, West Union. Art was an avid golfer and was a member of the North Bend Golf Club; he enjoyed many happy days there with his golfing buddies.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday January 3, 2009 at 1:00 PM in the Spurgeon Funeral Home, 212 Front St., West Union with Pastor David McCauley officiating. Family and friends will be received in the funeral home chapel on Friday January 2, 2009 from 2-4 & 6-8 PM and after 9AM on Saturday until time of service. Friendship Lodge #56 AF & AM will assemble in the funeral home at 12:30 PM for the purpose of attending and conducting Masonic Graveside Services. Interment will be in the Masonic Memorial Park, West Union with full military graveside rites accorded by the combined Doddridge County Service Organizations. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital Processing P.O. Box 863768 Orlando, FL 32886-3768.
